SCAFFOLDING APPROACH TO LEARNING

Hairstyling Educational Buzz is a valuable resource that aligns with the Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS) for hairstyling. In Canada, each province develops its own curriculum, and our content supports student success in high schools, colleges, and private schools offering hairstyling and/or nail technology programs.

In the United States, licensing requirements vary by state, but all states cover the topics listed in blocks A to I. Hairstyling Educational Buzz simplifies the process for hairstyling teachers in both private and public schools by providing relevant content that can be integrated into their programs, ensuring student success.

Our instructional model follows a scaffolding approach, where teachers demonstrate tasks using our HEB videos ("I do"). They then expand on the task through instruction, discussion, and/or demonstration, allowing the class to practice together ("we do"). Finally, students work individually to showcase their skill level ("you do"). Teachers offer ample support and formative feedback initially, transitioning to summative feedback and assessment as students gain proficiency.

Hairstyling Educational Buzz facilitates learning by breaking it down into manageable tasks. For example, we provide videos on sectioning hair, creating "C" shapings, sculptured pin curls, and using them in roller sets. By dividing the learning process into smaller sections, teachers can assess students' abilities and progress. Our YouTube channel offers access to all the videos for students who need refreshers or who missed a demonstration.

Another example of scaffolding is our terminology tests, which are divided into fill-in-the-blank tests. This format aids student memorization and reduces test anxiety. As students become comfortable, they can transition to multiple-choice and other formats. Reviews and multiple-choice tests correspond, with the reviews serving as pre-tests. Teachers can discuss the reviews during marking to ensure comprehension, guaranteeing success on the tests.

Exams are organized based on the blocks of learning, utilizing terminology, reviews, and multiple-choice questions. This proven scaffolding process leads to student success.

The six steps in our scaffold learning approach are as follows:

  1. Model: HEB Videos

  2. Use prior knowledge: Reviews and multiple-choice tests that align with exams, along with practical assignments that encourage the application of prior knowledge

  3. Discussion: Review questions can be discussed in class to enhance comprehension

  4. Terminology: Important vocabulary is shared

  5. Demonstrations: Videos showcase practical applications

  6. Technology: Assignments can be downloaded or emailed to students, and some may be completed online. Hairstyling Educational Buzz supports both face-to-face and online learning.

By implementing these steps, we provide an improved learning experience for hairstyling students and teachers alike.
